4 stars (An excellent introduction to the world of psychology) - The fascinating world of psychology - with its clinical, counseling, and research umbrellas - is one of the most consistently sought-after fields among laymen and student prospectives today. Almost every person, it seems, is interested in psychology in some degree - but carichatured presentations of the science in the mass media has given it a general unfortunate stereotyped profession. The layman or common person interested in psychology, then, needs a useful, informative text to introduce them to the ins and outs of the science. This book serves as a great introduction. Used as a textbook in introductory psychology courses in colleges throughout the nation, it is a useful tool for sparking your interest in the field. Thankfully, unlike many textbooks and books of this kind, it manages to avoid putting the personal issues and agendas of the author(s) too much to the forefront, and focuses instead on objective, factual information: the book uses a very technical approach that may seem dry to some, but which is ultimately worthwhile for the reader. A highly reccommended introductory text. ... 1 stars (Mosaicos Spanish) - Worst book I have ever used to learn a language. Who ever wrote the book was into a lot more than teaching. You need to use this disc or that disc or use the internet. The Prenhall is not very user friendly either. The book is very confusing. 5 stars (Lovely) - This is everything I could have hoped for in a foreign language textbook; it is an instructor's dream. Now...if they only designed a text of equal quality for Portuguese! 4 stars (Mosaicos: Spanish as a World Language) - Mosaicos is a complete and well-written language program. The material in the textbook is presented logically and in a practical manner. Additionally, the workbook, audiocassettes, and lab manual reinforce the textbook lessons while improving interpretation skills. The benefits of having various, native Spanish speakers on the lab cassettes are immeasurable. I found this package set to be not only effective but also enjoyable. ... 5 stars (The best Basic College Mathematics book) - The book is really easy to read and follow directions. I like the exercise reviews after each class and the test at the end of each chapter it is very helpful. I really recomend this book. 5 stars (The Best Jr. High Math Curriculum) - I'm a homeschooling mom of 7, and this is the best math curriculum I've ever used for Jr. High. Two of my daughters have used this in 7th and 8th grades and then went right into algebra without any problems. This book is so thorough in explaining each process that very little help was ever needed, and since then they've used this same company's curriculum to teach themselves algebra and geometry. I recommend this to anybody who wants a very easy to use and excellent math curriculum. (By the way, don't let the title fool you. A bright 5th grader can use this book successfully.) ... 5 stars (Great Book) - I had to use this book for my intro to psychology class. I planned on just skimming it to find the answeres, but I ended up reading it all. It is a great book with great stories. It is easy of follow and the definition of new words are listed on the side of the page, not in the back of the book like most textbooks. Great Book! 4 stars (Helps A lot) - As a pyschology student I bought this book in college because it was my intro to psychology class' textbook. How would I know that it would be so easy to follow? It really helped me out when I had to sit up late at night and review for the finals. What else can I say about it, besides it is a great book for anyone who wants to becomes more knowledgeable in the general field of psychology. ... 5 stars (Clear and easily understandable) - The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F. There's no substitute for learning young, but this is the closest thing to it. I've never seen a grammar book that's easier to understand than this one. Forget the Idiot's Guides or Dummies books, and invest a little more in this one and the accompanying workbooks. If you're really interested in boning up on your grammar skills, this will be of tremendous assistance. Also, if you're looking to buy the workbooks, remember that this is the THIRD edition, that it is in blue, and so you should conduct your search for the accompanying workbooks by first identifying those that are blue, and make sure that they're for the third edition. There are several editions available here on Amazon, so buy wisely. 4 stars (For those who crave grammar) - This book is a comprehensive reference grammar/workbook for non-native speakers of English. If you are trying to choose between Azar's grammar books, the "Blue" book is intended for intermediate to advanced students, while the "Black" book is for beginning to intermediate and the "Red" for raw beginners. A grammar outline from the "Blue" book is also available without exercises. The book is divided into chapters covering notorious grammar points, including: verb tenses, modals, passive voice, gerunds and infinitives, singular and plural, adjective clauses, noun clauses, connecting expre... 4 stars (Good book, bad DVDs) - This was the textbook for a university Arabic class I took. The book is good, but the included DVDs are awful and annoying. I recommend this book, but suggest purchasing the Instant Immersion Arabic 2-cd set to learn some vocabulary and phrases (for about $9.99). 4 stars (Great for self-study) - I met with a partner daily for an hour each day for 6-8 weeks, and we learned a great deal from this book. It is definitely good enough for self-study. The one problem is that for the vocabulary and cultural activities, it assumes you have a teacher to fill in the details, so we didn't get much out of those. We did learn to read, write, and pronounce all the sounds, and it's terrifically neat that I can now read basic Arabic signs which are in pictures in the newspaper. 3 stars (Workbook #1) - This is a somewhat cumbersome workbook designed for conventional advanced high-school or college-level classwork. I find it to be neither poor nor excellent, hence my rating of "3." It does not seem overly useful for self-study. One comical flaw on the front cover is the listing of the authors in English in an order that does not correspond to the listing in Arabic. ... 4 stars (Adequate, yet not overbearing summation of modern psychology) - Schultz and Schultz offer a wonderful summation of the history of psychology. Many history of psychology texts are large and burdensome, but Schultz and Schultz sift out the waste and offer the facts. Interesting anecdotes about psychology's pioneers are offered, and the social climate surrounding the perspectives of each school of thought is also mentioned. All in all, this is a great book to have in the collection for the average historian of psychology. The authors, unfortunately, do present the information in a rather bland display. More color and layout effect would be useful and appealing. Furthermore, the chapter on the impact of women and minorities in psychology should not just be thrown on the end of the book ... it should be integrated throughout. Other than those two drawbacks, however, the book is wonderfully done. ... 5 stars (An excellent, clear introduction to research methods) - This book is a very well-written introduction to methods in psychological research. Goodwin's style is friendly and often humorous. The information he provides is interspersed with case studies, historical antecdotes, and other "real-world" examples of research principles being put into practice. I found the reading to go extremely fast and painlessly. Goodwin covers such topics as the goals of scientific research, types of experimental research, the fundamentals of experimental design, ethics, subject sampling, types of measurement, assessing validity, and analysis of results. He does not go into great detail about statistics or computational analysis, as this is really meant to be a general introduction to methodology of designing research experiments. Each chapter begins with an overview, so you have a sense of what to expect ahead. He also provides study questions at the end of every chapter which are very helpful to work through. They are in various forms: multiple choice, short answers, essays, etc. so you can practice describing the topics to be sure you understand the material. There is also a study guide published for this textbook, which I would recommend getting if only for additional practice. Having a thorough grasp of research methods is critical for any student of psychology, and this book is probably required for many methods classes in universities. Luckily, it's a great textbook to use and makes research methodology interesting and enjoyable. 4 stars (Good book) - It was a very clear introduction to research methods. Simple and straightforward. ...
