4 stars (History Matters) - Mazower captures in remarkable ways the history of Salonica, a town which is today in northern Greece. At the same time many events that took place at Salonica were repercussions and optics on European and Middle Eastern history as a whole. For very different reasons at different epocs, Salonica found itself responding to events far beyond its shores. In the fifteenth century it became the home of many Jews expelled from Spain. After centuries under Ottoman rule, in the twentieth century it saw the return of Greek rule and then the forced removal of its large Jewish population under German occupation. The story of Salonica is an illustration of the ways in which a single physical place has seen whole communities come and go, typically under tragic circumstances. The book reminds us of how difficult it is for human beings with different beliefs and ideologies to live peacefully together. For many centuries this was achieved in Salonica, but then something changes and persecutions and emigrations follow. Mazower tells these stories without any attempt to prove a thesis about inter-faith or even human relations. There are interesting individuals but no heroes or saints. Communities do good things and do bad things. It is a story of many human lives that would otherwise have been buried with the communities that over the years have been forced to leave and officially left out of the city's history. After reding it Salonica will be on my next trip to Europe! 5 stars (Thessaloniki Explained) - The Mazower book is superb. It makes the city come alive with a careful and thorough review of the city's history. Its ethnic composition was fascinating to explore. His footnotes put me on to two other books which added even more to the story of this intriguing city. He made some of what I have felt on my several visits become clear. Although he writes in a precise chronological manner, he inserts up-to-date observations which make the mosaic of T... 4 stars (Insight in medieval history) - The New Concise History shows a good view on the Medieval 'madness' in which thoudands and thousands of people wandered through Europe, disorganised, plundering and pillaging, without the organisational powers of the former Roman armies driven by religious fanatism. It also gives insight into the current situation of the Middle East. Once the christian knights of Europe were not far from the Jihad warriors of today...Wruthless, without compassion, murdering anyone that had not the Christian faith. Especially the Jews of Germany had to endur in the start of the Crusads....In so far af very good and readable book. The author does not use any difficult language, myself being from Holland, and it gives a very good oversight and insight into Europe around the year 1000... 5 stars (GOOD WORK TO GET YOU STARTED ) - As other reviewers have pointed out, there are pros and cons to this particular work. I have some reservations myself, but overall, found the work good. This work does indeed give us a good, if somewhat brief, overview of the crusades. The author does present some ideas that are a bit different than than those that have been traditionally taught, and for the most part, unquestioned. This, in my opinion is a good thing as it makes us all think. On the other hand, I am not enough of an expert to be able to verify with any validity some of his statements. I do feel the author tried to be fare. On the other hand he tells us "research" is able to give us much more insight as to what was in the hearts and minds of men and women several centuries ago. I find this hard to beleave at times. I also felt the author sort of fluffed over and flitted through some pretty important aspects of the crusades. The act of completely obliterating city after city and the killing of hundreds of innocent people, really deserves more than one or two sentences. All in all, the work is a good survey and I feel it's greatest value is to spu... 5 stars (AP European History Students: Please Read!) - I just got my AP exam scores today for the 2005 examinations and I am proud to say that I got a 4 on the exam thanks to this book and the Princeton's Review Book. This book has a really good and easy to understand review for each of the topics tested on the AP exam and it really helps alot! 5 stars (ABSOLUTELY AMAZING) - I was in an AP class. I did not put my full effort into the AP Euro class and was scared right before the AP. Right about a month before the test I bought this book and read it all the way through. The day before the test I reviewed what I felt were the top 5 most important subjects (French Revolution, WWI, etc.) Needless to say, to my surprise I got a 5 on the test. An I truly would have to say that 85% of that grade came from reading this book. 5 stars (Partition of Lithuania) - I have found one error in this otherwise excellent book, an error that has been repeated in many other books of modern European history. When discussing the partitions of Poland the author discusses the partition of Lithuanian territories as though these territories were a part of Poland. He states that Byelorussia and Polish Ukraine were ceded to Russia by Poland. This is not true. The fact of the matter is that Byelorussia and parts of the Ukraine were ruled by Lithuania and not by Poland. There was a Lithuanian Ukraine but there never was any such thing as the Polish Ukraine. Hopefully these matters will be resolved in later editions. ... 4 stars (Microhistory of the masses) - Borne of the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" provides a glimpse into the life of a miller in medieval Italy. No ordinary miller is 'Menocchio', however, as he is inquisitioned for his radical religious philosophies. In a time and place where Catholicism was undoubtedly the religion of Europe, Menocchio harbored unique ideas about religious doctrine, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and man's purpose. Although some of his many ideas contradict others that he had, he was well-read and surprisingly well-educated for a man of his station. As Ginzburg says, though, we must look to the Protestant Reformation and the invention of the printing press as being major catalysts for such learning and religious evolution. Within the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" is most fascinating when we ask the question: Was this an isolated phenonmenon or was this a reflection of many people's views? The answer, I suppose, lies with Menocchio, but there is still much to be gleaned from this book. 5 stars (Well written, fascinating tale) - Description of a miller with an intresting ('modern') cosmological belief whose rebellion in thought is prosecuted by the Taliban of that time, the Roman Catholic Church. Forced to explain his nonAristotelian views (and, if Ginzburg is telling the truth, he responded extremely well to the inquisitors' questions!), the miller outwits his arrogant, narrow-minded judges and so wins the reward of torture and imprisonment, losing his wife, family, everything in the end. Galileo, who had a higher social position and powerful protectors, suffered no worse than house arrest, in comparison. 5 stars (Keep this book in mind) - Anytime you want to tell yourself that the Catholic Church isn't that bad, just keep this book in mind. It is just more proof that the church is the most corrupt institution in the history of time. . .with that in mind. The book is very interesting, it deals with th... 3 stars (Good for a traveler, Not for a class) - I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing. The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age. Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner. For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD. 3 stars (Could have been good) - This is a way for people to learn spanish fast but the book goes through things very quickly so you will find that you either don't understand or forget thing easily. I only suggest this book to someone how just wants to travel to a country that speaks spanish for a week but not for people who are truly interested in learning to speak spanish fleuntly at a good level. 2 stars (Useful for Some; But Not the Best) - I found this book to be useful at first, but I later changed to "Spanish Made Simple" (Jackson, Rubio revised by Nemethy; make sure you get the 2004 edition). The latter book is not nearly as "simplified" as "Spanish in 10 Minutes", but I found the more methodical approach, reviews, and review tests to be more conducive to study. Make sure you also get some means of audio instruction to get the pronouciation right. I used the Pimsleur CD's which are very expensive but easily the best. 3 stars (Looks fun but it's not.) - The controls are really frigid and it's not very fun. It's so realistic that it's boring. The game will let you fly in virtual reality for hours before reaching a target just as a real fighter pilot would have done except there is a warp feature which will cut the time down. You will still run out of fuel lots of times before you figure out what speeds are appropriate. It's a very complicated game and is not really very fun. There must be better flight simulation games than this. I gave it a 1 on the fun scale, but overall it's a well designed game and is the most realistic I've ever played. If the graphics were better I would have rated it as a 4 overall. 4 stars (Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3) - First of all I would like all those concerned to know that this game runs perfectly on WINDOWS XP!! 1.( Selective Startup)2.(Shuting down your Firewalls and Antivirus)3.(Disk cleanup Disk Defrag.)You have to educate yourself on all the little tricks that help the game run. Also don't foget to install any patches that are available for the game, they make a world of difference. You can't just put the game in without the proper preparation and expect it to run flawlessly. My computer,Windows XP Home Edition,Dimension 3000,Pentium 4,(3GHZ),512MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHZ,80GB Hard Drive, Intel video driver 82865G.Nothing Special!!!!! The game is GREAT and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!! 1 stars (Stiffed) - Don't buy it. We own a new Sony VAIO with a 2 Gig processor and 500 Gig hard drive, and the game won't run. Tried all the MS online fixes and recommendations...and the opening video plays...and the screen locks. I also own FS 2000 and Combat FS on this machine...which both work fine. The MS online help is available for a price that equals the cost of the game. Look, I'm probably commiting Operator Error and I'm not aware of the fix. So be it. After two days of this nonsens... 5 stars (Route 66 best available so far) - Although this program is not as detailed on Europe as DeLorme Streets USA is of the US, which spoiled me , it is the best I have found and is very usefull. I found pathetic the reviewer's ridiculous complaint that he could not find Florence or Rome, etc. How Anglo-centric can one be? He was using American spelling! When in Rome, one does what the Romans do - use the correct spelling, not the Anglized spelling! Rome is Roma, for instance. Do Europeans use their language's spelling of, say, Houston, and impose their spelling (maybe Hustoni in Italian!) when they travel here? No, they use the spelling our country uses! By his logic, someone from China traveling in Europe should be able to type in the Chinese language version for Rome and find it!! He expects the program to know every single world language word for European cities and translate! This program was not made strictly for Anglos. Sure, if it was, it would be easier. He needs to buy Microsoft's more primitive European map software! 5 stars (Great software with logical user interface) - I bought this just prior to a trip to Germany and the Netherlands. We installed it and used it successfully with a Microsoft GPS receiver without even referring to any of the documentation, a testament to simplicity. Keep in mind you need TWO people in the car to use this safely unless you're going to pull over regularly, and this is hard to do on many European highways. It was extremely useful because many streets in Amsterdam either didn't have street signs or the sign didn't match our printed map. Also, for whatever reason, signs in Germany and the Netherlands for major highways tell you what cities each direction leads to, but not the direction (East, West, etc.) so if you didn't know the names of some nearby towns, you couldn't tell which direction to take. Watching the arrow on the GPS allowed us to determine, in most cases, which way to go (in some cases, they'd have ... 5 stars (Outstanding Book -Dont miss it) - This is an outstanding book, with plenty of pictures - great insider material on furniture and architecture. And I already have a design MA with my own firm. 2 stars (NOT SUCH GREAT BUY) - I AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS TWO REVIEWERS, THIS BOOK IS GREAT ONLY IN THE WRITTEN INFORMATION, IN THE PICTORIALS IT IS INDEED SORELY LACKING. I HONESTLEY SAY THIS WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE I MYSELF AM CURRENTLY A DESIGN STUDENT, AND I HAD TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR A MAJOR PART OF MY INTERIOR DESIGN EDUCATION. I RECOMMEND THAT THIS BE A BOOK THAT YOU CHECK OUT FROM THE LIBRARY FOR REFERENCE AND NOT ONE YOU PURCHASE. 2 stars (Underwhelming and overpriced) - The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably. ...
