5 stars (This book is a timeless keepsake) - I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. 5 stars (An Extraordinary Treasure) - This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the " Last Place on Earth ": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. If the nearly, $1... 5 stars (Glory!) - I found this book to be one of the best Christian books I have ever read, bar none. I facilitate the Adult Bible Class at my church. I read it in April or May and then we studied it in the class in June and July. I am still reflecting on it after all this time! I cannot describe what I liked about the book. I can only say that Nouwen writes to me where I am. So much of what he said seemed to be written just for me. 5 stars (Mysticism through Art appreciation) - If nothing else, Henri Nouwen takes the reader on a methodology of how to appreciate a painting, in this case Rembrandt's specifically. He takes us on an observation tour which transcends into our very hearts as we realize that there's much more to the painted story than the son; there's the father; the other brother; and other people watching. At some point in time we are all one or a combination of the characters diplayed. Nouwen brushes his words as Rembrandt brushed his oils. A wonderful experience, and a book to keep and reread. 4 stars ("You are called to become the father") - Nouwen skillfully navigates Rembrandt's masterwork and Christ's (arguably) most famous parable. In both he finds "the heart of the gospel": God's unconditional love for the world. The navigation comprises three stages: the story of the prodigal son, the story of the elder brother and finally the challenge to find yourself as the father/mother at the center of the painting. Each stage has its own crises, breakthroughs and ultimate redemption - with the possible exception of the elder brother whose decision to enter the father's love is left ambivalent. Towards the end Nouwen achieves his dynamic spiritual insights, sounding almost Buddhist when he announces, "There is a dreadful emptiness in spiritual fatherhood ... But that same dreadful emptiness is also the place of true freedom." We are ultimately left with a portrait of impoverished fatherhood that is as wise as it is compelling. "Rembrand... 4 stars (the truth about cats and dogs) - workman has another success for animal lovers and those who just like to mock stupid dogs---essentially the entire population of literate people can appreciate the humour of these images. better than Bad Cat! 3 stars (Liked Fixed Mix Seeks Same better! ) - Although I enjoyed flipping thru this book, my favorite book of this genre is Fixed Mix Seeks Same, which is personal ads "written" by dogs. Not only does Fixed Mix... have superior photos, it's really a fun read. Overall, I say the more dog books the better! 5 stars (Thurber-worthy) - Ridiculous and wonderful. Silly dogs of all shapes and sizes...don't leave it out on the table if you don't want to be giggling all day. ... 1 stars (Honest Reviews?) - Were all the reviews written by the author? Give me a break! The fact that every review sounds the same will keep me from ever purchasing this book. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped! 5 stars (THE Book on Courtyards.) - Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows. A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. And in this courtyard, I'll have all the things needed, the ingredients so carefully detailed here, that ma... 5 stars (Lost Balls- a great photgraphic journey) - Charles Lindsay has captured the true soul of golf with this photographic journey through some of the most interesting places in the world. This book is perfect for the person who truely loves and understands the game of golf. His combination of humor and photographic genius make this a wonderfully entaining book for anyone who has ever played the game. I hope there is a sequel. 5 stars (Better than "How To Line Up Your 4th Putt") - Charlie Lindsay is an irreverant guy with an unfailing eye. He sees what others don't and makes you grin for the joy of discovery he has had with his camera out in nature searching for the bizarre and wonderful on and around the golf course. Be it a golf ball tucked neatly under a "meadow muffin" or a pair of golf shoes hanging from a tombstone, be prepared for a visual feast where golf and golf courses are the metaphor. What a treat. 5 stars (Cool Book, Great Information for Budding Sports Shooter) - I recently upgraded to a Canon Rebel to photograph my children's gymnastics and soccer events. I had this book on order before it was available, and just got it a few days ago. It has opened my eyes to what I need to actually take photos and not just use the automatic settings -- and it even contains information on these two sports! It explains a lot about digital photography in simple terms, which filled in several gaps for me about digital photography. Plus, my son is into skateboarding and my wife is a skier, so now I can figure out how to take photos of that as well. I also liked the information about what to do with the photos to process them, print them, and get them online. The method shown is easy and seems like it's not jsut meant for professionals; it includes point-and-shoot as well as big-camera info. It's great that there are so many photos and advice from many photographers, not just one. I've already recommended this book to my kids' coaches. Highly recommended! 5 stars (Just what I needed) - Cool book, densely packed with information that is actually useful. Maybe I can now start to live up to the capabilities of my D70 the next time I'm climbing. 5 stars (Deep, indulgent, & complete: A great value!) - This is my first Amazon review. I was motivated to write because this book is a superb resource for anyone wishing to improve their sports photography! As a "soccer mom" with two kids heavily involved in team sports, I had been wrestling with such issues as shutter lag, exposure in fading light, fast action, etc. (You know what I mean!)This book definitely showed me the way to solving those problems and many more -- and it's packed with inspirational action shots and tips from pro sports photographers. It's important to note that it doesn't just cover team sports, however: tennis, boating, adventure sports and other recreational pursuits are also given fine and useful coverage. (I go ...
